"A Window on the Past: African-American Life in Howard County from the Civil War to 1891" presents what is known about early African-American residents and their activities in Howard County in the late nineteenth century as found in local newspapers. This project is a result of the Indiana Heritage Research Grant awarded to the library in 1998. The grant was a joint award of the Indiana Historical Society and the Indiana Humanities Council, in conjunction with the National Endowment for the Humanities.

The contents of this project are a reflection of the time and there has been no attempt to alter what was written during this early part of Howard County's history. As it is today, babies were born, couples married, and both young and old died. There was socializing, religious fervor, politics, crime and punishment, love and hatred, education and business as usual. There was racial predjudice and racial pride. Presentation of this material is not intended to be offensive to anyone -- it is simply a window on the past.
