A native of Montgomery County, Ohio, John Coomler was brought to Wabash County, Indiana, as a young child. The family retained ties to Ohio, however, and John returned to his native state to marry Susannah on March 29, 1860. After the outbreak of the Civil War, he served in the 101st Indiana Infantry until the close of the war. The couple then farmed in Wabash County until 1880, when they moved to Howard County, acquiring a farm 5 miles northeast of Kokomo in Howard Township. After John gave up farming, the Coomler's moved to Kokomo, where he became a familiar figure about town. They had 7 surviving children. Their sons were: Benjamin Coomler, of Brownsville, Oregon; Sherman Coomler, of Jarvis, Oregon; and Ovid Cecil Coomler, of Indianapolis. Their daughters were: Martha Coomler, of Kokomo, who took care of them in their old age; Cora Carithers, of Newcastle, Indiana; Nettie Foster, of Seattle, Washington; and Etta Graff, of California. The Coomlers became members of the Kokomo Dispatch's "Golden Honeymoon Club" in 1923. Both John and Susannah attended Grace Methodist Church and are buried in Crown Point Cemetery.
