George Gibbs was a Howard County native, who moved as a boy to Carroll County, and then returned to Kokomo in 1890. Mary, who was born in Shelby County, Indiana, was brought by her parents to the Alto area at the age of three. She and George were married by Rev. R.S. Reed of the Alto Methodist Episcopal Church on December 20, 1891 at a Christmas dinner reunion at the house of her elder brother, Henderson Spurlin. They lived in south Kokomo, which was then the area just south of Markland Avenue, all their married life, and were long-time members of Main St. Methodist Church. Mr. Gibbs served as Kokomo City Councilman for two terms and on the Board of Public Works. He worked at the Kokomo Rubber Works for more than 25 years, and later with surveyor and City Engineer Ellsworth Hunt. In the latter position he contracted a severe case of influenza, which resulted in heart disease and his becoming an invalid the last 15 years of his life, nursed by his wife. Mr. Gibbs died just three days after the couple celebrated their 59th anniversary. They had no children.
