Long Term Lovers of Howard County

Dr. Arthur LeRoy "Roy" and Frances Belle "Fannie" (Lung) Harter: 55 Years
Married September 27th, 1899

Dr. Harter was one of Kokomo's best-known dentists and civic leaders in the first half of the 20th century. He was born on a farm in Carroll County where Flora is now situated. He left farming to attend Indiana State Normal College at Terre Haute and taught two years in a one-room country school. In 1896, he entered the Indiana University Dental School, graduating in 1901. While in studying dentistry he married Fannie Lung, of Galveston, on September 27, 1899. The couple moved to Greentown for one year, and in 1902 to Kokomo, where they resided the rest of their lives. Both of the Harters active in many civic organizations and were staunch members of the First Presbyterian Church. They had a daughter, Helen, who married a dentist, Dr. Robert Stowers, of Natchez, Mississippi; and a son, Dr. John Harter, a thoracic surgeon in Louisville, Kentucky, and 4 grandchildren.
