Native Howard Countians Vernis Kirkman and Rachel Poe were married at her parents' home on November 18, 1923, three days after Rachel's 16th birthday. The Rev. Robert Coburn officiated. Vernis was a 40-year employee of Continental Steel. Rachel joined the Kokomo Police Department in 1950 as a police matron and later worked in the Juvenile Aid division, retiring after 23 years. The couple had three children: Della Wilson, of Peru; Larry Kirkman, of Kokomo; and Vernis T. Kirkman, jr., who is also featured in this display, 5 grandchildren, and 6 great-grandchildren.
