Long Term Lovers of Howard County

Harold and Mildred (Fye) Smith : 72 Years
Married January 12th, 1929

Harold and Mildred were married in Richmond, Indiana on a cold day in January 12, 1929, the year of the stock market crash that began the Great Depression. Too poor to have a church wedding, they were married by a Justice of the Peace. After paying his $2.00 fee, they did not have enough money between them to take a bus, so they had to walk home in sub-freezing weather. Following their marriage, they moved to Kokomo, where Harold started working with what was then Crosley Radio. It turned into Delco Radio, and finally became part of GM, from where Harold retired. Mildred worked at and retired from Stellite Corporation. After retiring, they moved to Lantana, Florida, where they lived from 1967 to 1990. They then moved back to Russiaville, where Harold still resides at nearly 96 years young. Mildred passed away on August 22, 2001. They had 5 sons: John D., Robert C., Jim D., Bill J., and Richard L. Smith, and 1 daughter, Patricia K. Larke, all of whom kept them very busy. After 72 years of marriage they were still very happy.
