Long Term Lovers of Howard County

Edward Charles "E.C." and Amanda Jane (Pierce) Woodruff : 50 Years
Married January 1st, 1873

E.C. was born on June 22, 1851, in London, England, to Honora (McQuinlan) Woodruff. His father, whose name has not yet been discovered, had died shortly before his birth. E.C. came to the U.S. as a child. His mother, half-brother, and sisters stayed in New York City, but E.C. decided to go west. He took employment with the railroad as a very young man, and stayed a railroad man until his retirement. He was section boss and supervised, among other things, the laying of the railroad tracks from Lafayette to Anderson, Indiana. It was while doing this that he met Clinton County-native Amanda Jane Pierce. The couple were married in Hillisburg on January 1, 1873. Later, E.C. became a Methodist minister in Tipton, where they lived most of their married life. Following Amanda's death in 1923, he moved to Kokomo to be near his family. E.C. and Amanda had 6 children: Nancy Ellen "Nell" (Mrs. Herbert) Spencer, Ludica Lucille (Mrs. William) Dudley; Edward Charles, LeRoy, and Herbert R. Woodruff; and Audrey Monica, who married Benjamin Schick (also featured in this display). They had 17 grandchildren.
