Assistant Director

If you are passionate enough about libraries that you would keep working even if you won the lottery, you could be our next Assistant Director.

You: You won’t stop short of excellence as we redefine “indispensable” in 21st Century library terms. You have strong project-management skills; you are a results-oriented leader who can handle details without losing sight of the big picture. The nitty-gritty of taking visions from concept to reality excites you. You celebrate victories of all shapes and sizes but also believe that challenges breed innovation. You have routinely worked across traditional boundaries because you value all employees’ ideas, regardless of their job titles.

Us: We see city kids riding in a horse-drawn wagon as library learning and Staff Spirit Week as a win for both our staff and our community. We value strong community partnerships, including non-traditional ones. Through our Main Library, branches, bookmobiles, and outside our walls we serve 76,000 people in Central Indiana.

The job: Duties include working closely with the director on communication and implementation; supervising department heads to maximize their strengths and build a unified team; keeping the Main Library running smoothly; and coordinating special projects. You will also serve as a liaison between the library and the community on an occasional basis. An early project will be working with us as we revisit our mission and develop our next strategic plan. This is an exempt, 40-hour per week position. The salary begins at $57,600 plus excellent benefits. It requires a Master's degree from an ALA-accredited library school and five or more years of supervisory experience with a history of meaningful results. Candidates must possess or be able to acquire a State of Indiana Librarian Certificate 3 or higher.

Our community: Kokomo has won our state’s Community Achievement Award twice in recent years and recently made national news as the most affordable small city in America. Better yet, the library always has a seat at the table.
